The Presence Method

A practical approach for being at ease in yourself — and powerful in how you lead and communicate.

The Presence Method™ is our structured approach to accessing Presence — a grounded, connected way of being in which the mind settles, authenticity replaces performance, and influence arises without force.

It was developed by Daniel Kingsley, founder of Presence Training, through many years of working with leaders, professionals and speakers.

Rather than teaching performance techniques, it develops the internal conditions from which clear thinking, grounded leadership and confident speaking flow.

From reactivity to leadership

Under pressure, many of us default to defensive or reactive patterns.

This is human. It does not mean there is anything wrong with us.

The Presence Method™ trains the shift from these reactive patterns into the intelligently responsive state of Presence — and teaches us how to make that shift when it matters most.

When that shift happens, qualities such as confidence, compassion, curiosity and big-picture perspective arise naturally — not as techniques, but as expressions of the state itself.

The ability to make this shift makes all the difference in boardrooms and investor conversations — but equally in ordinary presentations, team meetings, client calls, and any moment where we feel exposed or under scrutiny.

What we mean by “Presence”

In our work, Presence is an embodied quality of awareness.

Put simply: Being in a state of Presence means we are steady, open and connected — especially when something important is happening, or needs to happen.

The state of Presence gives us the capacity to think clearly, relate authentically and respond intelligently in real time — which is why it is valuable not only when someone feels nervous or under pressure, but also for experienced professionals working in complex or high-stakes situations.

Being in Presence does not mean being tension-free or free from emotion. Strong emotions are an essential part of being human.

What changes is our relationship to them. Rather than reacting automatically, we remain aware of the felt sense of our own experience while staying engaged with the situation in front of us.

In practice, this can look like being fully involved in the conversation while simultaneously aware of what is unfolding inside us, inside others, and in the wider system.

From this state, qualities such as steadiness, warmth, curiosity and perspective tend to arise more naturally.

Presence is not something we perform or manufacture through technique. It is a natural way of being — and our ability to access it can be strengthened over time.

A definition of Presence

Summing this up more concisely…

Presence is an embodied state of awareness in which a person remains steady, connected and authentically responsive — regardless of what is happening outside or inside.

Attention is grounded in the body, perception is open, and the person is emotionally in contact with their experience of the moment. They are not simply analysing what is happening from a distance, but are touched by the experience of this moment — at the levels of feeling and connection — and able to respond from that contact.

Presence is not a performance technique or communication trick. It is a natural human capacity. Through The Presence Method™, individuals develop the ability to access this state reliably in leadership, communication and public speaking situations.

The Three Core Capacities

The Presence Method develops three interrelated capacities. Together, they form the foundation of steady, connected and effective leadership and communication.

1. Embodied Awareness

The ability to remain present in the felt reality of our own experience.

Embodiment changes the role of the mind. Thinking becomes a tool rather than the governing force. Attention settles into direct, lived experience rather than constant analysis.

From this grounded state, the nervous system settles. There is a felt sense of being at home in ourselves — centred rather than scattered.

When thinking is no longer dominant, perception becomes clearer. We see people and situations more directly, rather than through layers of rehearsal, projection or memory.

Being embodied restores access to embodied intelligence — the subtle information we are constantly receiving through our bodies. It becomes easier to remain steady when we are being seen, because being the focus of attention is no longer automatically experienced as threat.

2. Relational Presence

The capacity to remain genuinely connected to the people in front of us — not as an audience to manage, but as human beings to meet — while also allowing ourselves to be seen in return.

Relational Presence shifts the priority of communication: connection becomes primary, and content is carried through it. Attention rests in the felt sense of relationship, while the mind is trusted to organise and deliver what needs to be said.

Prioritising connection over content can feel counterintuitive. Yet when we do, our message lands more powerfully — and at the same time our own nervous system relaxes. A greater sense of safety and interconnectedness begins to emerge.

This connection deepens even further when we then allow ourselves to speak from what is real and alive for us, rather than from performance or self-protection.

3. Internal Self-Leadership

The capacity to bring steadiness and coherence to our internal world.

Strong emotions are an essential part of being human. But when they dominate our internal world, clear thinking and balanced communication become harder.

Internal Self-Leadership is the ability to notice these reactions as they arise and to relate to them with warm, grounded authority rather than resistance or self-judgement.

Rather than fighting reality or suppressing emotion, we learn to acknowledge what is present and listen to it. Emotions are not obstacles to eliminate, but signals carrying valuable information. When met rather than opposed, they soften — allowing clarity and perspective to return.

As internal conflict reduces, harmony increases.

Confidence arises from knowing we can relate to strong emotion without being swept away by it. We realise that confidence is not the absence of fear, but the capacity to be truly at ease in the midst of it.

How these capacities work together

These capacities are mutually reinforcing. Embodiment grounds us in lived experience. Relational Presence stabilises connection. Internal Self-Leadership brings harmony to our emotional world.

Activating any one of them draws us into a more integrated state of embodied Presence, giving us greater access to the others and to a deeper, more authentic confidence, and enabling us to lead and communicate from who we truly are.

What changes when leaders develop Presence

When leaders begin operating from Presence rather than performance or defensiveness, changes show up in practical, observable ways.

Greater internal steadiness

Leaders are less dominated by anxious thinking, self-criticism or protective defensiveness. They notice activation in real time — frustration, urgency, fear — and are less likely to transmit it unconsciously into the room.

This creates a quieter, more sustainable form of confidence: not the absence of pressure, but the ability to remain steady within it.

Clearer thinking in complexity

When attention is no longer consumed by self-protection or impression management, more cognitive capacity becomes available.

Leaders are better able to hold multiple perspectives, tolerate ambiguity and respond proportionately. Decisions become steadier and less reactive.

Deeper relational trust and authority

When people feel genuinely met rather than managed, trust increases. Teams feel safer to speak openly and challenge constructively.

Authority becomes quieter but stronger — boundaries can be held without force, and influence arises from steadiness rather than control.

More sustainable leadership energy

Operating from constant performance or defensiveness is exhausting. Presence reduces internal friction, which often leads to more sustainable energy and steadier leadership over time.

How this shows up in practice

The Presence Method shows up in practice in a number of aspects of the work we offer. Here is a selection of some of these key areas.

Public speaking

We train speakers to move from performance to Presence.

Drawing on principles from the Presence Method™, speakers learn to remain grounded and responsive under pressure so that connection, clarity and influence arise naturally.

Origin

The Presence Method™ was developed within Presence Training in London by Daniel Kingsley.

It grew out of years of practical work with leaders, founders and senior professionals — and was shaped by what consistently helps people communicate well when the pressure is real: steadiness, genuine contact, and the ability to hold a wider perspective without losing the moment.

Over time, this became a cohesive method: a way to train the internal capacities beneath performance, so leadership and communication become more grounded, more relational, and more reliable.

The relational dimension of this work has been significantly shaped by the Relational Presence methodology, whose emphasis on connection over performance has informed this pillar of The Presence Method™.

Frequently asked questions

Is this coaching or therapy?

No. This is leadership and communication training — that also cultivates a deeper sense of ease in ourselves.

While the work can be personally developmental, it is designed for professional contexts and practical outcomes. We are not attempting to eliminate protective patterns or “fix” the past. Instead, we train leaders to relate differently to strong emotions and reactive habits, so they no longer run the show.

Is it “mindfulness”?

It includes awareness and embodiment practices, but the focus is application: how you lead, speak and respond in real-time interaction.

What’s the difference between using technique and accessing Presence?

Techniques can help, but Presence is about the internal state you are communicating from.

Technique works at the level of behaviour. Presence works at the level of state. When that state is grounded and open, technique becomes simpler and communication becomes more natural.

Presence itself is a natural human state. What can be trained is the ability to access this state reliably. If you’d like to experience it in practice, explore our programmes or begin with a conversation.
